"Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation."

Kemal Atatürk

1881 - 1938

Founder of the Republic

Sevgili Arkadaslar,

"There are two Mustafa Kemals.

One the flesh-and-blood Mustafa Kemal who now stands before you and who will pass away.

The other is you, all of you here who will go to the far corners of our land to spread the ideals which must be defended with your lives if necessary.

I stand for the nation's dreams, and my life's work is to make them come true."

Atatürk stands as one of the world's few historic figures who dedicated their lives totally to their nations.

In the words of Ataturk...

The foundation of the Turkish Republic is culture. 1936

The student, at whatever age, should be looked at from the point of view of the adults of the future and they should be treated as such. 193O

It is only teachers who are saving nations. 1925

If I had not become the president, I would have wanted to be the Minister of Education. 193O

Educate youth. Give them the positive ideas of knowledge and science. You will succeed in getting the enlightenment of the future for them. 1927

Teachers! The Republic requires guards who are of high character and with mental, scientific and physical strength. It is up to you to educate the new generation with this characteristic and ability. 1924

In any case, it is necessary to be victorious in education activities. The real salvation of a nation can only be in this manner. 1922

Ataturk and the Emancipation of Turkish Women

Known by his nickname Kemal, which means perfection, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk founded the Republic of Turkey, independent of Ottoman rule, in 1923. He served as its first president from 1923 until his death in 1938. Atatürk initiated expansive reforms, such as abolishing polygamy and granting new rights for women. He also abolished corruption, improved public education, and modernized industries.
